Blockchain nodes are essentially the backbone of a blockchain network. They are individual computers or devices that maintain a copy of the entire blockchain ledger and participate in the process of validating and relaying transactions. Each node operates independently within the network and communicates with other nodes to ensure consensus on the state of the blockchain.

Nodes perform several crucial functions within a blockchain network:

Transaction Validation: Nodes validate transactions by ensuring they adhere to the rules and protocols of the blockchain network. This validation process helps maintain the integrity of the ledger and prevents double-spending.
Block Propagation: Once transactions are validated, nodes group them into blocks and propagate these blocks across the network. Other nodes then verify the contents of the block and add it to their copy of the blockchain.
Consensus Mechanism: Nodes participate in the consensus mechanism of the blockchain network, which is the process by which agreement is reached on the validity of transactions and the addition of new blocks to the blockchain. Different blockchain networks use various consensus mechanisms, such as Proof of Work (PoW), Proof of Stake (PoS), or Delegated Proof of Stake (DPoS).
Network Maintenance: Nodes help maintain the health and efficiency of the network by relaying messages, synchronizing with other nodes, and detecting and rejecting invalid transactions or blocks.

Nodes can be categorized into different types based on their roles within the network.

Full Nodes: These nodes maintain a complete copy of the blockchain ledger and participate in all functions of the network, including transaction validation and block propagation.
Mining Nodes: In blockchain networks that use PoW or similar consensus mechanisms, mining nodes compete to solve complex mathematical puzzles to add new blocks to the blockchain and receive rewards in the form of cryptocurrency.
Light Nodes: These nodes do not maintain a complete copy of the blockchain but instead rely on full nodes to provide them with the necessary information for transaction verification.
The decentralized nature of blockchain networks, where multiple nodes independently validate transactions and maintain copies of the ledger, is a key feature that provides transparency, security, and resilience to the network.
